Julean Simon has a background as a saxophonist in the early eightis and as a videoartist in the late eightis. He started experimenting with video, looking at it especially as a "time-based-art", applying musical composition principles. Most videoworks have been based on soundtracks and music-pieces. Preference of lowTechnology: old b&w surveillance  cameras, Commodore C64 and Amiga graphics (the endversions often have been transfered to U-Matic or BetaCam in order to improve screening performance).

Between 1989 and 2001 he worked in research and software-development for several companies in US and BRD. In 2001 he discovered the wind-midi-controller - an electronic wind instrument -and started to program voices for this instrument, to modify the hardware and to practice intensively to develop special playing techniques.

Most of Simon's newer videos document various music-projects. One reason to use video is to demonstrate, that all music was played live and to adress the irritation of the audience that e.g. piano-like or percussive sounds or an entire ensemble was indeed generated by a single wind instrument (today's electronic music is mainly produced in non-live studio-situations, more or less by technicians). The videos dont have a distinguished character, since usually a camera (without a cameraman) was positioned and recorded the session. The lean postproduction attempts only to find some form to transport the idea, with a minimum of effects.

'reciter le dictionnaire', bzw. 'Jones recites Webster's' beruht auf der Einsicht, dasz ein Computer bestens dazu geeignet ist, Listen zu verarbeiten. Ich habe daher zwei Listen ausgewaehlt: die der Woerter in 'Webster's Dictionnary' und andererseits hat Daniel Jones, Autor des Standardwerks der englischen Phonetik, 1914 seinen eigenen Mund bei der Bildung der verschiedenen Laute photographiert. Diese Bilder wurden digitalisiert und es wurde ein Programm geschrieben, das sie entsprechend der Lautfolge von Woertern aus Webster's Dictionnary aufruft, so  daß also der 1914 fotographierte Mund von Daniel Jones wieder zum Sprechen gebracht wird und aus Webster's rezitiert. In anderen Versionen wurden die sequentiell abgerufenen Wörterbucheinträge willkürlichen Objektsammlungen gegenübergestellt.

Experimental transposition of the drum&base-lines preproduced for three punk-concerts of "ten+man" in Ljublijana, Graz and Hamburg. The images have been shot with a consumercamera (video8), color-modulation with a selfbuilt mixer.  These are early examples of video-clips, which became common several years later.

The story background: Two persons have been sent to a distant country by the Zoological Society to collect pairs of unknown animals. They have been waiting for a long time for the ship that will take them back, so they started cooking and eating their study-samples. They dont regard this as a problem, since they themselves would bring back all the diseases and the characteristics of the collected samples, anyway. Back in the home-country, the film is a documentary of their stay in quarantine, where they are secluded for study purposes.
The soundtrack  "zooConcret" is a suite of duets produced 1984 by Julean Simon (soprano saxofone) and Haimo Puschnig (piano). The filmic episodes are opposed to and partly overlayed with written text parts (a technique used later in video clips).
